Former KU researcher charged; security increased

LAWRENCE | A former research assistant who had been banned from the University of Kansas campus is jailed after being seen on campus, allegedly with a gun in his pickup truck.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old David Young was charged Thursday with multiple crimes, including stalking, telephone harassment and violation of a protective order.

Young worked at the Kansas Geological Survey for 17 years until his job ended on July 8. University officials say they could not discuss why Young no longer works there.

Young was seen near Moore Hall on Wednesday, prompting university officials to increase security around the building, which houses the geological society.

The Lecompton man is being held in Douglas County Jail on $250,000 bond.
