St. Louis man charged in toddler's death

ST. LOUIS | A St. Louis man is charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

Brandon Whitby, 20, was being held Tuesday on $1 million bond. He's also charged with child endangerment and child abuse. It was not clear if Whitby had an attorney.

Whitby is accused of killing 2-year-old Malik Duff and beating the toddler's 9-month-old brother with a belt.

St. Louis police were called Saturday to a hospital where Malik was unresponsive. Authorities said the toddler died of blunt force trauma, while his younger brother had internal injuries and marks on his face.

Police searched a residence and reported finding a loaded gun inside a toy car and heroin stored under a mattress. They said the items were within reach of the children.
