About 175 hourly employees at the General Motors Fairfax plant accepted buyouts as part of the latest round of job cuts at the automaker, said John Melton, bargaining chairman of United Auto Workers Local 31.
The Fairfax plant, which produces the popular Chevrolet Malibu and is in the midst of launching a new Buick LaCrosse, has received transfers from idled GM plants around the country to replace those who are leaving, Melton said.
On Monday, GM said about 6,000 employees companywide took early retirement and buyout offers. GM has about 54,000 factory workers and wants to end the year with 40,500.
