Wichita's fire marshal retires

Wichita fire marshal Ed Bricknell retires today, ending 35 years as a firefighter.

"It was like living a dream," Bricknell said.

A native of London, Bricknell became an American citizen in Europe and joined the U.S. Air Force. His time in the military included a pair of stints at McConnell Air Force Base, and he stayed in Wichita after completing his service.

After working for three years at Cessna, he joined the fire department in 1974.

Bricknell, 61, is retiring on the same day that 24 new firefighters graduate from training and join the department. He finds pleasure in that.

"They're the lucky ones — they're at the beginning of their careers," he said. "How lucky can you get?"

Bricknell plans to stay in Wichita in his retirement.

"This is home," he said.
