Trial of KU student accused in beating to start

LAWRENCE | Jury selection is scheduled to get under way Monday in the trial of a University of Kansas student accused of severely injuring his ex-girlfriend in an October 2007 attack.

Matthew Jaeger is charged in Douglas County District Court with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and making a criminal threat.

The victim testified during a preliminary hearing that the attack happened after Jaeger broke into her apartment and found her with another man. Jaeger is trained in a Brazilian form of jiujitsu, and the victim said he choked her until she became unconscious.

Prosecutors said he dragged her into the back seat of his car, which his friend was driving, and fled.

Lawrence police later stopped the car and found the injured woman. She was hospitalized for nearly two weeks.
