Car linked to Kwik Shop shooting found; suspects still at large

WICHITA — A 25-year-old woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest while she sat on a motorcycle in the parking lot of a convenience store in south Wichita on Thursday night, police said.

A gold Chevrolet Monte Carlo with gold tire rims drove into the parking lot of the Kwik Shop at 3959 S. Hydraulic at 10:50 p.m., and two men got out and approached the victim, Lt. Ken Landwehr said.

Police found the Monte Carlo earlier today but are still looking for the two suspects.

Witnesses told police the men exchanged words with the woman before one of them shot her once with a handgun and left the area.

"We believe they targeted this individual," Landwehr said, adding that it appeared to be linked to drug activity.

The driver of the motorcycle was inside the convenience store waiting in line to buy a soda when the shooting occurred, Landwehr said.

The man identified as the shooter was the passenger in the Monte Carlo, witnesses told police. He is a stocky black man about 5-feet-8 and 230 pounds. He was wearing a white tank top and blue jean shorts.

The driver is a black man between 5-feet-11 and 6-feet-2 and about 250 pounds, witnesses told police.

The victim was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
