Emporia State student information wrongly transmitted

EMPORIA | Emporia State University has sent a letter to 5,700 students after a computer file containing personal information was inadvertently transmitted.

University officials say the computer file had names and social security numbers of students enrolled for summer and fall semesters.

University President Michael Lane says there is no reason to believe the information was inappropriately accessed or used. A university press release said the file was sent to a person authorized to have access to the information, but not in the format it was transmitted.

The university says no financial data was released.
