Man arrested in west Wichita homicides

A series of minor disputes among residents of a west Wichita apartment complex culminated in Thursday night's double homicide, police said today.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shootings in the parking lot of the complex in the 4000 block of Memory Lane, Lt. Todd Ojile said.

The two victims were identified as Emmanuel Delatorre, 23, and Jesus Manuel-Esparza, 18. The suspect fled the area in a vehicle and later crashed his car into a tree after turning from English onto Hillside, Ojile said.

The driver was trying to restart the car when officers arrived at the scene in response to the report of a crash. He ran from the officers but was apprehended after a brief chase.

The officers then discovered his car matched the description given by witnesses to the shooting. Over the past few weeks, witnesses told police, the victims and the suspect had had a series of disputes over activity at the complex.

All three men were at a party that stretched from the parking lot into the suspect's apartment when the suspect went into his apartment, retrieved a gun, walked out to the parking lot and shot each victim in the head, witnesses told police.

Detectives will present evidence in the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office sometime this week, Ojile said.
