Boy injured by pipe bomb is improving

The condition of a 14-year-old boy injured by a pipe bomb he ignited Saturday night has improved, police said today.

Police said the boy was upgraded from critical to serious condition at a hospital. The boy had difficulty lighting the fuse of a pipe bomb on the porch of an abandoned home in the 3900 block of Wabash Avenue about 10 p.m. Saturday and it exploded before he could get away. Police said several boys made two pipe bombs. The first bomb was ignited at the intersection of 40th Street and Wabash Avenue.

The Fire Department, the Police Department’s bomb and arson unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
