Body found after Bates County standoff

A standoff with a gunman in a house ended Tuesday night when police found a body inside.

The gunman had barricaded himself inside after allegedly shooting a Missouri Highway Patrol officer. The officer, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, had minor injuries.

Douglas A. Miller, 49, allegedly fired at Cass County and Highway Patrol officers serving a search warrant. Officers returned gunfire, and Miller retreated to a back room of the house west of U.S. 71 and Route AA.

Officers entered the house after about five hours and found a man’s body in a back room. Officers did not immediately confirm the victim’s identity or how he died.

Miller is wanted for attempted first-degree murder in Pasco County, Fla., and Cook County, Ill. He has four more felony arrest warrants in Pasco County.
