Kansas sheriff says deputy saved 3 lives by pulling them from burning car

COLUMBUS, Kan. | A Cherokee County deputy sheriff is hailed as a hero by his boss after pulling three people out of a burning car.

Sheriff David Groves says Deputy Josh Whitely responded to a one-car accident around 12:20 a.m. Sunday near the southeast Kansas town of Scammon and found three people trapped inside.

Whitley broke a window and pulled all three from the car, which was carrying gas cans and camping fuel and was fully engulfed in flames. Groves says his deputy's actions saved three lives.

The car's driver was injured and taken to a hospital, but the other occupants declined treatment.
