COLUMBIA | Advocates for replacing state and federal income taxes with a higher sales tax rallied Saturday at a mid-Missouri county fairgrounds.
Supporters call the new taxation system a "fair tax." Under the plan, the sales tax rate would be increased and new purchases would be subject to the tax.
The rally at the Boone County Fairgrounds attracted conservative activists, Republican state lawmakers and a Democratic organizer. The event was organized by the national group Americans for Fair Taxation.
Critics of the idea say sales taxes would need to be raised significantly to generate the same amount of revenue. They also contend eliminating income taxes would increase the taxes paid by the middle and lower classes.
