Former All-Star second baseman Joe Gordon, the Royals' first manager in 1969, was elected today to the baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
Gordon, who died in 1978, was a nine-time All-Star with the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. He played on five World Series championship teams (1938, '39, '41 and '43 with the Yankees and '48 with the Indians) and retired in 1950. In 1969, Gordon's only season as Royals manager, Kansas City finished 69-93.
Gordon was the only player elected Monday. Ron Santo, Gil Hodges and Joe Torre fell well short of the 75 percent needed for election to Cooperstown.
