COLUMBIA | A Columbia man is charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his mother, whose body was found in the trunk of his car during a traffic stop in August.
A Boone County grand jury indicted 19-year-old Daniel A. Sanders on Friday in the death of 53-year-old Helen C. Sanders. The medical examiner's office determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to drowning and traumatic compression of the chest.
Columbia police arrested Sanders on unrelated traffic offenses after pulling his car over just after 9 p.m. on Aug. 14. As officers were searching the car before having it towed away, they found Helen Sanders' body in the trunk and arrested Daniel Sanders for tampering with physical evidence.
He was being held Friday on $1 million bond.
