WICHITA, Kan. | Police were involved in a hostage situation at a Wichita apartment complex early today.
At about 3:00 a.m. , two officers were called to a disturbance in a second-floor apartment. Police said the officers heard gunfire and were both shot as they approached the door of an apartment.
Police spokesman Gordon Bassham said one of the officers was in surgery with a gunshot wound to the lower torso and the second was shot in the leg. A person in the apartment was also shot and hospitalized but his condition is not available.
Bassham said officers were trying to convince the gunman holding a hostage to surrender.

He said the gunman was a 21-year-old man; the hostage was believed to be an 18-year-old woman.
