Kansas City police today identified a bicyclist who died after he was struck by a car Saturday afternoon as Michael D. Hammond, 57.
Police said Hammond, of Kansas City, had pedaled southbound on Brooklyn Avenue into the intersection on Independence Avenue when a westbound car hit him. The driver said she had the green light. Witnesses who saw the collision told police they didn't see the color of the traffic signal.
The crash occurred about 2:20 p.m. Saturday. Hammond died at a hospital about nine hours later with his family by his side. Police said he worked as a neighborhood handyman.
