An opportunistic thief stole a car from a gas station last night, but soon dumped it after finding a two-year-old child strapped inside.
Police found the car abandoned in a neighborhood about 10 blocks away from where it was stolen. The child was not hurt.
The incident began about 7:20 p.m. Sunday when a woman told police she left her child in her car to step inside the Fast Stop at 75th Street and Holmes Road to pay for fuel.
A black sport-utility vehicle pulled into the parking lot and a passenger got out. He then hopped into the woman's car and sped away.
Officers checked the area and found the woman's car in the 7300 block of Tracy Avenue.
Police later found the suspect's black SUV parked near 67th Street and Lydia Avenue.
