Teen rescued from Kansas River in Lawrence

LAWRENCE | Rescuers performed CPR on a 14-year-old boy after rescuing him Friday afternoon from the spillway east of the Bowersock Dam in Lawrence.

The Lawrence Journal-World reported on its Web site that the boy was rushed to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with critical injuries and later flown to a Kansas City-area hospital.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Chief Mark Bradford said officers and firefighters risked their lives during the rescue. He added that he “hopes it continues to be a recovery with a positive result.”

Authorities rushed to the Kansas River after received a call shortly after noon that the boy was clinging to and partially trapped under a log in an area marked with large danger signs.

Authorities are investigating whether the near drowning was an accident or a crime.
