Teen pleads not guilty in Nevada, Mo., stabbing deaths

NEVADA, Mo. | A 17-year-old southwest Missouri boy suspected of fatally stabbing two young women has pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance.

Garrett Matthew Mason appeared in court Tuesday in Vernon County on two counts each of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court records show that he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A pretrial hearing was scheduled for June 11. No attorney is listed for Mason in court records.

Vernon County Prosecutor Lynn Ewing III did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday.

Mason was taken into custody Sunday night within hours after 14-year-old Kylie Leyva and 18-year-old Anne Reed were stabbed at a Nevada home where Reed lived. Both teens were flown to Joplin hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.
