Two drown in separate accidents on Meramec River

BOURBON, Mo. | A pair of separate accidents have claimed the lives of at least two people on the Meramec River.

Authorities say two men were swept into deeper water while swimming with friends Sunday near the Meramec Caverns and disappeared. Emergency workers recovered the body of 27-year-old Shidhar Tekula of St. Louis and would continue searching for the other Monday.

The Missouri State Water Patrol said 4-year-old Margaret Murphy of Wildwood drowned 20 minutes later 10 miles upstream.

The patrol said the girl was one of five children riding in a canoe when it struck a log jam near the Campbell Bridge and capsized. The 43-year-old New Jersey woman operating the canoe and nearby adults were able to save four of the children.

The victim was wearing a life vest but was pinned underwater by the logs and the canoe. Her body was recovered 20 minutes after the incident.
