Officials evaluate damage in 33 Missouri counties

SPRINGFIELD | State and federal officials are evaluating damage in 33 counties from a storm that roared through southern Missouri on Friday.

Missouri State Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susie Stonner said Tuesday that several hundred homes were damaged or destroyed from a series of tornadoes and straight-line winds.

She said she didn’t expect to have more detailed damage estimates until late next week.

SEMA also reported at noon Tuesday that 14,450 electric customers remained without power, down from a peak of more than 150,000 outages Friday.

Two people were killed near Poplar Bluff, and a Dallas County man died of a heart attack after a tornado sucked him and his wife out of their home.

SEMA said another person died in St. Clair County from flash flooding.
