Missouri House OKs life sentences for child rape

JEFFERSON CITY | The Missouri House has approved legislation that sets life prison sentences for those convicted of particularly vile rapes against children.

The legislation was approved 138-15 on Thursday and now goes to Senate. Lawmakers have about a week to pass bills before the legislative session ends.

Under the bill, those who commit sodomy or rape against a child who less than 12 years old would face a life prison sentence if the crime was “outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhumane,” such as an incident involving torture.

Sponsoring House member Jay Wasson, a Republican from Nixa, said the life prison sentence only would apply to the most serious cases.
