Ex-police chief gets probation for DUI

SALINA | A former small-town police chief who was fired for stealing the fire department's beer has been sentenced to a year of probation for an unrelated driving while intoxicated conviction.

A Saline County District Court judge also ordered Brian D. Hill to pay a $500 fine for the December DUI in which he was arrested after someone saw mail falling out of a mail truck he was driving for the Postal Service. He also is facing two counts of driving while suspended.

Hill was police chief in Wilson until January 2008 when he was convicted of theft for stealing beer from a refrigerator in the Wilson Volunteer Fire Department's office. Firefighters caught him in the act on video by setting up a motion-sensitive camera, then using the footage at his trial.
