KC play nominated for national award

"Clay," the hit one-man hip-hop musical that kicked off Eric Rosen's inaugural season as Kansas City Repertory Theatre's artistic director, received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance.

The play, written and performed by Matt Sax and directed by Rosen, moved to New York for a limited run after playing Copaken Stage in September.

The Outer Critics Circle is an association of writers covering New York theater for out-of-town publications, radio and TV stations and Web sites. The awards cover both Broadway and Off Broadway shows and recognize playwrights, directors, composers, choreographers, actors and designers.

Also nominated was Nancy Opel, a Johnson County native, for her performance as the Mayor of Tromaville in "The Toxic Avenger Musical."

The winners will be announced May 11 and the annual awards ceremony will be on May 21 at Sardi's Restaurant in the heart of New York's theater district.
