Fire damages Lee's Summit duplex

Residents of a Lee's Summit duplex escaped a fire that broke out early this morning in one of the units.

About 12:45 a.m., an occupant called 911 and said there was smoke coming from the neighboring unit of the duplex in the 700 block of SE Cottage Court, according to Battalion Chief Jim Eden of the Lee's Summit Fire Department.

Firefighters used foam to put out the blaze, which originated near the stove. The fire was contained to the kitchen but caused smoke and fire damage throughout the first floor of the unit.

Damages were estimated at $125,000. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Residents were allowed back into the neighboring unit, which sustained minor smoke damage.
