Bob and Elizabeth Dole booked for Dole Lecture

LAWRENCE | Former U.S. Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole are scheduled to deliver the 2009 Dole Lecture sponsored by the Dole Institute of Politics on May 3.

Bob Dole has given one of the annual lectures before, but the institute has been trying to get both Doles to appear together since then. The couple will appear at the Lied Center to deliver the lecture called "Unlimited Partners."

Bob and Elizabeth Dole met in 1972 as she lobbied him to add consumer issues to the Republican platform. They married in December 1975. Bob Dole served in the Senate from 1969 to 1996. Elizabeth Dole was elected to the Senate for North Carolina in 2002 but lost the 2008 election.

The Dole Lecture is hosted annually to commemorate Dole's recovery from serious wounds suffered in a World War II battle in Italy on April 14, 1945.
