KC police officer hurt in crash with minivan

A police officer went to a hospital with a head injury after his cruiser collided with a minivan at 33rd Street and South Benton Avenue this afternoon.

One of two men in the minivan was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains.

Kansas City Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney said that the officer was on his way to help other officers investigating a shooting but that it wasn’t immediately clear whether his lights and sirens were on as he entered the intersection shortly after 1 p.m. The accident remained under investigation this afternoon.

The police car, which was westbound on 33rd, did have a stop sign. The minivan, which was northbound on Benton, had no stop sign.

After colliding, the police car ran into a tree and the minivan came to rest in the front yard of a house. None of the injuries was thought to be life-threatening.
