Former Kansas prison guard gets 12 years for molestation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. | A former guard at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for molestation.

District Judge Joe McCarville on Friday sentenced John Rothstein to 155 months in prison after Rothstein pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The judge called it "an everybody loses case."

Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder said he agreed to the plea deal to spare the victims, who were 11 and 13 years old at the time of the crimes, from having to testify. The incidents happened between April and October of last year.

Public defender Lee Timan pushed for a lower sentence, saying Rothstein had no prior criminal history and had been diagnosed with bipolar and schizoaffective disorders.
