Overland Park fire kills one

An apartment fire in Overland Park left one person dead early Saturday, authorities said.

Just after 3 a.m., firefighters answered a call at the Lodge of Overland Park apartments in the 7500 block of West 106th Street, said Jason Rhodes, a spokesman for the Overland Park Fire Department.

Fire crews found light smoke coming from a ground floor apartment, Rhodes said. They entered the apartment and found a small smoldering fire and a woman who had died in a bedroom.

The causes of the woman's death and the fire were under investigation Saturday, Rhodes said. Fire damaged only the bedroom, while the rest of the apartment sustained smoke damage.

Rhodes noted that firefighters found the apartment's smoke alarm sitting on a counter with the battery removed.

"That is the cheapest life insurance you can buy, a working smoke alarm," Rhodes said.
