Topeka woman charged with murder after wrong-way crash

TOPEKA | Authorities say a Topeka woman was drunk while driving her SUV the wrong way on Interstate 70 when it slammed into another car, killing the driver.

Evelyn E. Brooks, 38, made her first court appearance Monday on charges of second-degree murder, driving under the influence of alcohol and other counts. She asked for a public defender. Brooks is being held in the Shawnee County Jail.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Topeka police said Brooks was driving east in the westbound lane of I-70 late Sunday when her SUV and a Geo Prism collided head-on.

The driver of the Prism was identified as 27-year-old Cara S. Jackson of Topeka. She died at the scene. Police said the “severe impact” of the collision collapsed the driver’s compartment of the Geo.
