Greinke roughed up again as Royals lose 9-3 to Mariners

SURPRISE, Ariz. | Zack Greinke will get three more starts before the Royals open the regular season. So he’s got plenty of time to round into form.

Greinke struggled for the third time in four starts Wednesday night in a 9-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Surprise Stadium. He gave up six runs and 11 hits in five innings.

That makes 15 runs and 20 hits in his last 14 1/3 innings.

“I thought today would be the day I started clicking,” Greinke said, “but I obviously didn’t start clicking. I think I have three more starts left. Hopefully, next time it will click.”

The Royals, 11-7-3, got homers from Mark Teahen and Mike Jacobs against Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn. Teahen has four homers in his last three games.

Greinke retired six of the first seven hitters before yielding two runs in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Mike Wilson and Yuniesky Betancourt hit homers, and Greinke allowed four other extra-base hits.

Seattle, 9-9-1, also spanked reliever Robinson Tejeda for three runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Tejeda had only allowed two runs in his previous 10 2/3 innings.
