Starting later today, look for U.S. 71 in northern Cass County to be reduced to one lane the next couple nights so workers can install girders for a new interchange at 187th Street.
The lane closure starts at 7 tonight when southbound 71 highway is reduced to one lane just south of the Missouri 58 interchange. The closure will be a couple miles long so expect some delays in this area. The closure will last until all girders over the southbound lanes have been erected or until 7 a.m.Wednesday, whichever comes first.
Southbound drivers are encouraged to exit at Route 58, taking Peculiar Drive south to J Highway back to U.S. 71.
On Wednesday, the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 will be down one lane starting at 7 p.m. The construction zone starts near the J Highway interchange near Peculiar and extends northward for two miles to Missouri 58. The highway will be down to one lane until all the girders over the northbound lanes are in place or 6 a.m.Thursday, whichever comes first.
The closures could be repeated overnight Thursday if all the girders aren’t in place. All of this is weather permitting.
Highway 71 was supposed to have been narrowed to one lane last week, but that closure was canceled because of bad weather.
The new $10.1 million interchange being constructed at 187th Street will connect to a parkway running from Holmes Road to U.S. 71. The interchange is not supposed to be done until June 2010.
