Kansas day care shut down because of firearms in home

AUGUSTA, Kan. | The state says it has shut down a Wichita-area day care after inspectors found firearms in the home within reach of children.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Thursday issued an emergency order of suspension against the Belinda Rosenbaum Day Care Home in Augusta, 20 miles east of Wichita. The order said a late-February inspection of the home uncovered several hazards, including three guns.

The order said the firearms were without trigger locks and were not in locked storage. Two of the guns were in the master bedroom closet and the third was stored along with ammunition in the headboard of a bed where a 7-month-old child was sleeping.

The order said the guns were within reach of all the children at the day care.
