WASHINGTON | The sinking economy caused a big jump in bankruptcy filings in Missouri and Kansas in 2008.
Statistics released Thursday showed 25,396 new filings in federal bankruptcy courts in Missouri, or 19.5 percent more than in 2007.
In Kansas, new bankruptcy filings rose 10.3 percent to 8,900.
Nationally, bankruptcy filings increased 31.4 percent to more than 1.1 million. That was still below the record of more than 2 million filings in 2005.
