Mayor makes good on vow, guns dogs down

MCCUNE, Kan. | McCune's mayor says he was just protecting his community when he shot two dogs that had been chasing some children. But the Crawford County Sheriff's Office sees it a little differently.

Don Call is mayor of the town of just over 400 people in southeast Kansas. He admits that he killed the animals — one of them a German shepherd — on Sunday after warning a local dog owner months earlier that he was going to do it.

A sheriff's report says Call shot the dogs with a rifle while sitting in his vehicle. The mayor then left and picked up a trailer, came back and loaded the dogs up to take to his home for disposal.

Sheriff Sandy Horton says he is asking the county attorney to file charges against the mayor.
