WINFIELD, Kan. | Investigators are trying to determine the cause of death of a southern Kansas woman whose body was found under an overpass.
Cowley County Sheriff Don Read says a railroad crew called authorities shortly before 8 a.m. on Saturday after spotting the body of 42-year-old Beatriz "Betty" Halverstadt of Winfield underneath the U.S. 77 overpass, about a mile south of the city.
The woman's car was found parked by the highway about a mile away.
Read says it appeared Halverstadt started walking toward Winfield after her car broke down.
