Former Royals All-Star Mike Sweeney has signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners that gives him an invitation to big-league spring training.
It’s similar to the deal he signed with Oakland last year, when he made the club and hit .286 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 42 games. He was released in September.
Sweeney, 35, is among the Royals' all-time leaders in most offensive categories. Injuries have limited him to 608 at-bats the last three seasons.
