Nixon: Walsworth may merit new term as UM curator

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. | Marceline businessman and big-time booster Don Walsworth could be headed back to the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

Gov. Jay Nixon said Thursday he is considering reappointing the former board chairman to a new six-year term as curator. Walsworth’s first term ended in December. Nixon is expected to fill that and two other vacancies on the nine-member board within the next few weeks.

The Democratic governor cited Walsworth’s role in recruiting University of Missouri system President Gary Forsee. The former Sprint Nextel CEO has led the university system for the past year.

Walsworth is a prominent booster of the Columbia campus’ football and basketball teams and has been a major campaign contributor to Nixon. He donated $25,000 to Nixon’s campaign for governor in October. He declined to discuss his interest in another term in a brief interview with The Associated Press.
