Missouri Senate approves three Nixon appointments

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. | Gov. Jay Nixon’s first three appointments sailed through the Republican-controlled Senate with barely any debate.

In a single voice vote, the Senate on Thursday approved Kelvin Simmons as commissioner for the Office of Administration, Col. Stephen Danner to lead the National Guard and Karen Mitchell to head the Revenue Department.

All three are state government veterans.

Simmons is a former Public Service Commission chairman, gubernatorial aide and Economic Development Department director.

Danner served with Nixon in the state Senate and ran for a congressional seat representing northwest Missouri.

And Mitchell was the deputy attorney general under Nixon for about a decade.

Before taking office last week, Nixon, a Democrat, publicly announced nearly his entire Cabinet. Only the insurance department director nominee has not been named.
