Woman in Visine assault files for divorce

SPRINGFIELD | A Fair Grove woman accused of spiking her husband's tea with Visine has filed for divorce.

Tonia L. Peterson, 40, was charged Jan. 8 with first-degree assault. She posted a $100,000 bond Monday.

On Tuesday, her husband, Cecil Peterson, obtained a temporary protection order against her.

Tonia Peterson filed for divorce Wednesday.

Prosecutors allege Tonia Peterson poisoned Cecil Peterson's drink last year with the eyedrops to kill him, but only succeeded in giving him stomach trouble. She allegedly discussed the murder attempt with a co-worker, and deputies believe she might have been preparing a second attempt on her husband's life.

A probable cause statement said detective were told that ingesting too much Visine would lead to a coma and other “serious symptoms.”
