Topeka man charged with killing co-worker waives hearing

WESTMORELAND, Kan. | A Topeka man charged with kidnapping and killing a co-worker waived a preliminary hearing in Pottawatomie County District Court.

Deon Andrew Ross' preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday and Friday but lasted just five minutes after the 24-year-old waived his right to the hearing. Magistrate Judge Steven Roth set arraignment for Feb. 20.

Ross is charged with felony first-degree murder, two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping in the death of 18-year-old Alheli Alcantara. Her body was found Oct. 12 outside a motel in the Pottawatomie County side of Manhattan.

Ross and Alcantara worked together at a Topeka Burger King.

An amended complaint added one rape count, alleging Alcantara was sexually assaulted while she was incapable of giving consent due to the effects of liquor, mental disease or defect.
