Kansas City apartment fire forces residents out of their homes

Residents were evacuated this morning following a fire in a second-floor apartment in a multistory complex at 47th Street and Prospect Ave.

"They contained the fire to one unit," said Joe Vitale, a battalion chief with the Kansas City Fire Department. "All the occupants got out safely."

One or two of the apartment residents were being checked or treated for possible smoke inhalation, Vitale said. Crews were working to remove smoke from the building. Investigators had not yet determined the fire's cause.
