4-year-old on bike killed by 18-wheeler in southwest Kansas

ULYSSES, Kan. | Three people are dead in separate highway mishaps in southwest Kansas, including a 4-year-old boy who was struck by an 18-wheeler in Ulysses.

The Highway Patrol said Ethan Rodenberg of Ulysses died shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by the truck while riding his bicycle near downtown. Troopers say the child was crossing the street when he was struck.

In Finney County, 49-year-old Don Martinez of Garden City was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck at 6:40 Tuesday while walking in the westbound lanes of U.S. 50.

Troopers also reported 24-year-old Miranda Hale of Liberal died when her car was struck by an oncoming vehicle that crossed the center line of U.S. 54 in Kiowa County. The driver and passenger in the other car were hospitalized after the 1:40 p.m. crash.
