K-State signs junior college center

Abdul Herrera and Frank Martin are back together again.

Herrera, a 6-foot-11, 260-pound junior college center from Hutchinson, Kan., Community College, signed Friday afternoon to play basketball for Kansas State. It reunites Herrera with Martin, the Wildcats’ coach.

Martin, who formerly served under Bob Huggins as an assistant coach at Cincinnati before K-State, offered Herrera a scholarship to Cincinnati the day after Huggins hired him in 2004. Herrera redshirted at Cincinnati, but never played for the Bearcats before transferring.

“Coach Frank, for me, is a great coach, a great person,” Herrera said by phone. “Hopefully, we’re going to have a great time.”

Herrera averaged 6.3 points and nearly five rebounds in 2007-08.
