In an effort to improve what was one of the NFL’s worst return games last season, the Chiefs agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free-agent return specialist B.J. Sams.
Sams, 27, played three seasons for Baltimore and then missed most of last year with torn knee ligaments. His agent, Sean Kiernan, said Sams would be ready for full contact when training camp begins in July.
Sams finished in the top 10 in kickoff return average (25.7 yards) and punt return average (10.6) in his most recent full season in 2006. He scored twice on punt returns as a rookie in 2004.
The Chiefs ranked 30th last season in kickoff return average (19.2 yards) and 25th in punt return average (7.6). Their leading returner, Eddie Drummond, is an unrestricted free agent and the Chiefs have not tried to re-sign him.
