KU grabs championship by winning slugfest against Texas

Mario Chalmers scored a career-high 30 points as the Kansas Jayhawks won the men's Big 12 championship game at the Sprint Center 84-74 over Texas.

It came down to this: Which guard could keep it up - Kansas’ Chalmers or Texas’ D.J. Augustin? Both players had magnificent first halves, scoring 14 points and 18 points, respectively.

Chalmers stayed hot, while Augustin scored just two second-half points, and the Jayhawks won their third-straight Big 12 tournament title.

There was no way the two teams – the Big 12 regular-season co-champions – could keep the same pace they created in the first half, as Texas took a 46-45 lead to the intermission.

In the first half, the Jayhawks hit nine of 15 3-pointers, while the Longhorns swished in eight of 11. Augustin hit all five of his threes, and Chalmers went five-of-six.

Brandon Rush continued his hot shooting from Saturday night with 19 points on six-of-nine from beyond the arc.

Kansas, 31-3, will now await word from the NCAA selection committee about its seeding. After Tennessee lost on Saturday to Arkansas in the SEC tournament semifinals, the Jayhawks just might have played their way into a No. 1 seed.
