The Jets moved to the Kansas City 35 on the game’s first drive but on fourth down and 5, Kellen Clemens’ pass was incomplete and the Chiefs took over. . . .

The Chiefs went three plays and punted. Kolby Smith injured an ankle and was taken to the locker room in a motorized cart. . . .

After forcing the Jets to punt, the Chiefs again went three plays and punted. Brodie Croyle threw incomplete to an open Tony Gonzalez on second down and was sacked on third down. . . .

The Jets had the ball in Chiefs’ territory but Jared Allen ended the drive with a third down sack. The Jets punted but downed the ball at the Chiefs’ 2. . . .

The Chiefs again failed to gain a first down when Croyle for the second time couldn’t get the ball to an open Gonzalez.

The Jets burned the Chiefs with a halfback pass on the first play of the period. Leon Washington threw 36 yards to Wallace Wright to the Kansas City 8. The Chiefs looked like they might hold when Jared Allen sacked Clemens on second down, but Clemens’ shovel pass to Jones wound up putting the Jets in the end zone. . . .

Jason Dunn dropped a third down pass for the Chiefs, giving them four possessions without a first down. The Jets finally did what the Chiefs couldn’t do for themselves. New York roughed punter Dustin Colquitt, giving the Chiefs a first down at their 49. The Chiefs finally earned a first down when Jon McGraw took a snap in punt formation and ran for three yards. But what passed for a drive stalled and the Chiefs punted into the end zone. . . .

The Chiefs also forced a punt and Eddie Drummond’s 22-yard return put them at the New York 39. Croyle threw 11 yards to Jeff Webb on first down but the drive stalled and Carney made the field goal attempt in heavy rain. . . .

The Jets converted on fourth and one on Jones’ one-yard run to the Kansas City 25. The Jets pushed as far as the 4, but the Chiefs held and forced the field goal.

Third quarter

Croyle started the half with passes of seven and 17 yards to Gonzalez to put the Chiefs at the New York 42. The second catch was the 816th of Gonzalez’s career, making him the most prolific pass catching tight end in NFL history. He passed Shannon Sharpe, who formerly played for Denver and Baltimore.

The Chiefs couldn’t sustain the momentum and punted . . .

Derrick Johnson dropped what should have been an interception that he would have returned for a touchdown on New York’s next possession . . .

The Chiefs’ Nate Harris picked up two special teams penalties in a short span. A holding penalty cost the Chiefs field position after a long Drummond punt return and his late hit on Leon Washington after a Chiefs punt gave the Jets the ball at the Kansas City 45 . . .

The Chiefs held when Tamba Hali tackled Jones for a two-yard loss on fourth and one . . .

Croyle’s 12-yard pass to Webb on third down moved the Chiefs to the 50. But the Chiefs punted again for the seventh time.

Fourth quarter

Bernard Pollard downed a punt at the New York 1 on the first play of the period. Clemens threw for 12 yards to Jerricho Cotchery on the next play. The Chiefs held from there and forced a punt.

The Chiefs took possession at their 45. A 15-yard pass to Kris Wilson helped put the Chiefs at the Jets’ 34 but Croyle took a 15-yard sack on third down and the Chiefs punted once more . . .

Passes of 13 yards to Dwayne Bowe, 13 yards to Gonzalez and 16 yards to Samie Parker put the Chiefs in position for Webb’s touchdown, his first NFL score. Herm Edwards opted to kick for the tie rather than try for two and take the lead . . .

An 11-yard pass from Clemens to Cotchery helped move the Jets to midfield at the two-minute warning. The Chiefs held from there and after the punt took over at their 15 with 1:15 remaining . . .

They earned one first down at their 29 but had only 41 seconds left. Later, facing a third and 5 with 29 seconds left, Croyle was sacked and the Chiefs relinquished the ball. The Jets took over at their 14 with 10 seconds left. Clemens took a knee and the game headed for overtime.
