No longer interim, Beebe gets Big 12 job

No relocation fees for the Big 12 on this move. Dan Beebe, the league’s new commissioner, will simply change offices.

Beebe, 50, was named the Big 12’s third commissioner on Wednesday. He had served in an interim role when Kevin Weiberg stepped down in July.

Beebe had been the Big 12’s associate commissioner since joining the staff in 2003. He previously spent 14 years as commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

“Dan Beebe brings to the Big 12 the experience and vision to advance the Big 12 into the next stage of its development as one of the preeminent collegiate athletics conferences in the United States,” said Big 12 board chairman and University of Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman in a statement.

Beebe, who agreed to a five-year contract, begins his duties immediately as the Big 12’s third commissioner, succeeding Kevin Weiberg, who stepped down in July.

Others who interviewed for the job include Indianapolis attorney Jack Swarbrick, Ohio Valley commissioner Rick Cryst, Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters and Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowski, who later removed himself from the candidate pool.
