Kansas City police shot and killed a gunman this morning after the man fired a shot that slightly injured an officer near an apartment complex on the city’s northeast side.
The identity of the victim has not been released. The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, according to a police statement.
According initial police reports, the shooting occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m., while three uniformed police officers were conducting surveillance for drug sales in the Greenleaf Apartment Complex, located at Winner Road and Hardesty Avenue.
Upon approaching the area, a black male ran northbound out of the complex. A foot pursuit ensued and the suspect was caught on Winner Road. There was a brief struggle and the man brandished a handgun.

The gunman fired two shots, striking the officer in the foot. His partner returned fire shooting the suspect in the torso. The gunman was taken a hospital, where he later died.
The injured officer was treated a local hospital and listed in fair condition.
The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave until cleared to return to work.
