Children ages five to 14 can register for the 12th annual Operation Small Fry fishing derby, scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Clay County area parks.
The free, daylong event is sponsored annually by deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. A total of 150 children will be accepted for this year’s derby. Advance registration is required.
Children will spend the day with a mentor learning how to fish, including casting, baiting and safety techniques. Participants will also compete for prizes in a variety of contests.
Rods, reels and tackle boxes will be provided free to youngsters who don’t have them. All participants will receive a fishing cap.
